Right: the same game in 2021.Īnd while they are focused in the OPT-side of the mod scene, along the years there has been several projects that spawned along them to tackle things like Total Conversions to port the campaigns of the previous three titles using all the shiny new toys XWAU was releasing. Here is, for instance, your casual 60-mission fan-made campaign for X-wing vs TIE Fighter. And since the first game there have been multiple editors for both things, so you could do pretty much whatever you wanted, from adding new ships to a game to just create an entirely new campaign from scratch. It's also spectacularly compatible between the various engine generations, to the point you could easily pass a mission from one game into another. The X-wing games are wonderfuly modular, revolving around two main objects: missions and OPT (aka ships) files. And let's not forget how much graphics advanced in the 00's, so Alliance looks quickly fell out of grace. And while XWA was still perfectly playable with the usual resolution and multicore issues, going back to the older games could be rough after all the improvements XWA brought to the table. This means that if you wanted to play a Star Wars space sim during the previous 21 years, you had to go back to the classic games. I don't have anything against its multiplayer modes, I'm just not interested on them. And while Squadrons is 100% a love letter to the X-Wing series, the campaign it includes is little more than a glorified tutorial with some great moments nullified by the rigid structure of hand holding and really strict checkpoints. Rogue Squadron games were great fun, but they just went into a different and much more arcade route. Now, until Squadrons came out last year, this was it for Star Wars space sim games. Sadly we didn't get any expansion to follow/finish the family story, but it closes in a high enough note with the Battle of Endor. The campaign itself also managed to avoid the trap of emulating the original game too close and felt really fresh, placing the player in the boots of a civilian freighter pilot with sympathy for the Rebellion. Finally fully 3D, with a revamped "phsyics" system for everything, going from a couple dozens simultaneous ships to a gazillion of them, missions divided in various different areas to which you'll need to travel mid-mission on hyperspace, adding functional turrets to the player's ship (and thus, flyable freighters ala Millenium Falcon). It's also a much more refined and ambitious game than the rest of the series, mostly thanks to the improvements on the engine along the years. Like the first two games, XWA is once again a single player experience, although it keeps an expanded multiplayer mode. I could talk all day about this game and its legacy, but I'll just drop a Super Bunnyhop video on the subject: It was an amazing experience, arguably still one of the best SW titles ever and my favourite game of all time ( *insert avatar quote*). The first one, TIE Fighter, came one year later and improved everything to stupid levels at the same time they succeeded on letting you play as the bad guys without feeling stupid. The fucking Death Star trench run? Oh yes.

#HOW TO MOD TIE FIGHTER PILOT SIMULATOR#
Complexity and "realism" not too far from your regular flight simulator from that time? Yup. Unlimited replay value thanks to its smart design? Yeah. Chance to pilot all the Rebel fighters in dogfights against the Empire? Check. It was everything I didn't know I ever wanted. So you can imagine how happy my 9-year old self was when the original X-Wing was released in 1993. I've been a Star Wars fan since I have memory, but the part that has always appealed me the most wasn't the jedi, the Force and the fancy lightsabers, but the fast, battered and amusingly WW2-esque starfighters.
